“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them” – Albert Einstein
Supporting disabled and marginalised people to envision and then achieve a good life is the stated purpose of most funders and organisations. Funding is distributed to individuals, through individualised funding mechanisms, or to organisations and providers, for the purpose of assisting people to get a better life. In the majority of circumstances a great deal of the funding will be used to purchase human resources (staff), who are inducted, orientated and deployed to assist people to make their good life aspirations become reality.
Why is it that many individuals, families and providers are aware of situations where people have been unable to achieve their good life aspirations despite the infrastructure that is present for that purpose? One of the reasons for the lack of life achievement is that the people doing the doing, usually front line staff, can have limited awareness of:
- What they have been employed to do and why
- How to do it
- What is required to be of genuine service to another
- What the ‘Good Life’ actually looks like in the context
- Reliable and practical theoretical frameworks
- Exposure to, and skill development in, practical and proven tools
- The invisible barriers that they, and the person they are serving is being constrained by
- Other ways of practicing that would likely achieve better outcomes
- Great examples of what is possible and
- Exposure to other people that have a track record in assisting people to get and sustain a good life
With the Systems Transformation agenda (Mana Whaikaha) having taken root in the Mid Central region from October 2018, there is a growing awareness that the winds of change are building and that preparing for the new environment is a wise and pragmatic step. Preparing the ‘workforce’ is of course an important aspect of being able to adapt to the changes required.
The training workshops below offer a range of content, ideas, frameworks, concepts, practical tools and developmental opportunities for people wishing to prepare for the new era where disabled persons and their families have increased choice, control and purchasing power.
