On the afternoon of 29 October 2021 Minister’s Sepuloni and Little heralded a raft of disability sector and legislative changes aimed at further transforming Aotearoa NZ into a less-disability society.  If you missed it, you can watch it by following this link | Announcement on Disability System Transformation and Accessibility (attitudelive.com)

One of the core elements announced was the national roll out of Enabling Good Lives (EGL).  So, what does this, or perhaps, what could this mean for Taranaki?

These two half day workshops have been created to actively and intentionally advance our local conversation on

  • What is important to us as a region?
  • What do we want to see happen in our communities?
  • How can we prepare for ‘an EGL rollout’? and perhaps most importantly

This workshop aims to bring together people with lived experience and family / whanau to workshop the questions above and to korero. In this way we are genuinely seeking to hear from the people and we want to do this kanohi-ki-te-kanohi (face to face).

What is important to you and what can we do as a region to advance the EGL spirit and intent both now and into the future. Your voice is really important.

How it will work

There are two sessions.

The first is Friday 4 February 2022 | 12.30pm – 4.30pm

The second is Saturday 5 February 2022 | 9am – 1.30pm

Your attendance at both sessions is ideal, but we do understand that this might be a challenge for a variety of reasons. (If you can’t make both sessions’ please let us know in advance for catering and resourcing purposes.)

About your hosts

These workshops are locally inspired and managed, though the EGL Taranaki Steering Group (Sam Burgham, Emma Crofskey, Craig Nielsen, Leighton Littlewood), a small group of dedicated people with a diverse range of community involvement who are deeply passionate about the opportunities the new era of EGL in Taranaki will open up.  The EGL Taranaki Steering Group have sourced some funding support through a Te Pou grant and have invested time and energy into creating these workshops.

Tony McLean has been invited to guide us through our time together.  Tony will be familiar to some of you as he and his wife Ange lived in New Plymouth from 2007 – 2013. During this period their two daughters were born at base hospital while Tony was the Manager of Accessibility (2007 – 2010) and then working locally with a number of families through Imagine Better (2010 – 2013).  Tony, Ange and their three children live in Papamoa. He still works for Imagine Better.

Local Facilitators have played an active role in the creation and design of the workshops and will also be an integral part of the delivery.
