Workshop Content
Today we are witnessing an increasing percentage of the population becoming dependent on agency structures. These agency structures are beset by an increasing number of disfunctionalities that express themselves very oppressively in the lives of dependent people.
Agencies are increasingly constrained in their capacity to respond to people’s needs. Many people even enter what one could call a full time, lifelong “clientage” that encompasses virtually all aspects of their lives.
While dependency need not be oppressive it quite commonly is. This workshop will explain the above realities and the dependencies and “bondage” in which so may socially disadvantaged people find themselves.
It will examine the concept of Liberation and show how this may include ways to enable a person to function outside agency structures. Emphasis will be placed on:
- Enhancement of competencies
- Enhancement of social image
- Removal of unwarranted restrictions
- Complementation via individual and collective commitments to vulnerable people
Protecting the Health and Lives of Hospital Patients, Especially Those Who Are Societally Devalued
Presenters - Jo Massarelli and Joe Osburn
Jo Massarelli has a particular interest in advocacy in medical settings. She teaches a variety of workshops on protecting vulnerable people in the hospital, and on medical decision making. She is also a member of the Medical Safeguards Project, which is a group of nurses and doctors in Massachusetts committed to safeguarding the health and lives of intellectually disabled people with significant medical needs.
Joe Osburn has worked with families and children since 1964. His work has focused primarily on the use and dissemination of Social Role Valorization Theory as a major safeguard in the lives of handicapped, poor, elderly, and other socially vulnerable people. He has a long-standing affiliation with Wolf Wolfensberger, and is a member of the North American SRV Council, and an editor of, and contributor to, the SRV Journal.
Workshop Content
The workshop explores the unpleasant and paradoxical reality that anyone who is hospitalized is exposed to grave dangers which jeopardize that person's health and safety, sometimes to the point of making the person dead. This is a reality for all ill people in the hospital, including valued citizens, but is especially ominous for people who are members of a socially disadvantaged class, such as the elderly and the impaired. The workshop will offer practical information and examples on necessary guidelines and measures for protecting people in the hospital.
This workshop is based on the work of Dr Wolfensberger of the Syracuse University Training Institute, as well as the practical experiences of clinicians, family members, and advocates. Dr Wolfensberger is considered to be one of the most influential thinkers of the century on disability and social devaluation.
All participants in this workshop will receive a copy of “A guideline on protecting the lives & health of patients in hospitals, especially if the patient is a member of a societally devalued class" by Dr Wolf Wolfensberger.
