Seeking Community: He Ngakau Aata Kitea

Eleven inspiring life stories with photos by people with a learning disability.

Read about friendships, the love of family/whanau, the pleasures of music, collecting, laughter, and shared meals, the meaning of helping others, the pride in taking up leadership roles in advocacy and church.

The Book

In the book the life stories are interspersed with a commentary on current issues in the field of learning disability. We may have closed the institutions but our vision of inclusion is clouded and most people remain isolated, on the margins of their communities.

The book enables funders, service staff and families to reflect on what needs to happen for all people to move beyond the role of passive recipients of care to be able to contribute positively to their communities.

The DVD

The DVD was made specifically to ensure the stories are accessible to everyone. On it people read their stories and show their photos. Each story is 8-10 minutes long, so it is best to show just one at a time.

How to Purchase the Book or DVD
