About Us

Our Purpose

Standards Plus helps people and organisations to imagine better. We work alongside disabled people, older people, mentally unwell people, families, service providers and government agencies to implement the objectives of the New Zealand Disability Strategy and Health of Older People Strategy.

Our Objectives

Our primary objectives are:

  • Promotion of social value
  • Supporting people who are socially devalued and their families to' take charge'
  • Working alongside service providers, government and community agencies to 'imagine better' for those they serve

Promotion of Social Value

The promotion of the social value of people with a disability, older people and people with a mental illness in New Zealand society.

“Persons with disabilities have emerged in the public eye in recent years in both affluent and economically poor societies as being people who have a legitimate grievance with their communities due to their historical role and status as being people who have been forced to live at the margins of everyday life.” Michael Kendrick 2004

"Mental health and mental well-being are fundamental to the quality of life and productivity of individuals, families, communities and nations, enabling people to experience life as meaningful and to be creative and active citizens. The primary aim is to enhance people’s well-being by focusing on their strengths and resources, reinforcing resilience and enhancing protective factors." WHO Declaration 2005

Supporting People who are Socially Devalued and Families to 'Take Charge'

Support for people who are socially devalued and their families to exercise more control and authority over their lives and futures.

“In reality, despite all the talk of person-centered approaches, most service models are created before people actually arrive on the scene. This has its roots in the authority and control of service design decisions being carried by parties other than the person being served.” Michael Kendrick 2003

Working alongside Service Providers, Government and Community Agencies to 'imagine better' for those they Serve

Support for service providers who are genuinely engaged with trying to find better ways to support the lives of people who are socially devalued.

“There is still a long way to go for community membership to be a reality. It requires collective action, new thinking, innovation and creativity.” National Health Committee 2003
